Almost every pundit on the planet was unanimous in condemning Paris Saint-Germain’s 98th-minute penalty last night. Newcastle United held on until the dying embers when referee Szymon Marciniak awarded a controversial spot-kick.

Tino Livramento was judged to have handled the ball inside the area despite Ousmane Dembele’s cross deflecting off his chest first. Newcastle players, coaches and supporters raged at the decision which thwarted a memorable Champions League win.

Kylian Mbappe buried the resulting penalty to snatch a point, meaning the Magpies’ fate is now out of their hands regardless of whether they beat AC Milan at St James’ Park on December 13. Eddie Howe’s side need Borussia Dortmund, who qualified for the knockout stages with a win at the San Siro last night, to take points off PSG in their final group game.

As expected, most of the post-match reaction focused on the stoppage-time drama at the Parc des Princes. ChronicleLive has profiled a round-up of how the pundits viewed the penalty call. It is safe to say few agreed with Marciniak or VAR’s decision…

Jamie Carragher

“That is an awful decision to go against you as a football player. I understand when you say sometimes, ‘the arm is away from the body and things like that’.

“He is so close. It takes a deflection. His arm is in a motion to run. Where is he actually supposed to put his arm? His arm isn’t just stuck out standing there. He is actually motioning to run and defend. Nobody likes these. Supporters don’t like this.”

Ally McCoist

“This referee is the best in the business. He’s been great for the majority of the night. It comes off Livramento’s chest and hits his left elbow.

"I said on commentary, ‘If that’s a penalty, we may as well forget about it’. That is absolutely never a penalty. If we’re giving penalty kicks for that, in the biggest completion on the planet, it’s a disgrace.”

Jermaine Jenas

“When you look at that decision, it’s one of the most disgraceful I’ve seen in a long time. The nature of the game, all the energy the players put into it, and it comes down to a shocking decision a referee has made.

“It’s a deflection off his body which has hit his arm. Not in any walk of life is that a penalty. What’s he supposed to do? I’m fuming. There’s a feeling that they’ve been cheated.”

Richard Keys

“I’m scouring (the internet), as I sit here, and I see anyone who thinks that was a penalty. I think our initial interpretation is correct. Body to arm… you can’t call that.”

Gary Lineker

“How on earth is that a penalty for PSG? Ludicrous!”

Tim Sherwood

“It comes off his stomach and hits him on the arm. There’s no way he can get out of the way of it. It’s a disgusting decision. It’s ridiculous.”
