One person has been taken to hospital after the A68 was closed in Northumberland on Tuesday morning after a two-car collision.

The collision was on the southbound side of the carriageway near Riding Mill, with the road closed between the junction for the A695 and Kiln Pit Hill. No-one is believed to have suffered any serious injuries, but one patient was taken to Hexham General Hospital's urgent treatment centre by the North East Ambulance Service.

The road was closed in both directions, with traffic being diverted on the A68 and motorists warned to expect delays. It reopened shortly at 10.40am, after both cars were removed and gritters made the scene safe.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "Just before 8am this morning (Tuesday), we received a report via the ambulance service of a two-vehicle collision on the A68 Southbound near Riding Mill. Thankfully, no-one is believed to have suffered any serious injuries.

"The road is currently closed in both directions and traffic is being diverted on the A69 before joining the A68 further down the carriageway. Road users are advised slight delays are expected."

An NEAS spokesperson said: "We received a call at 7.40am this morning (Tuesday 28 November) to reports of a road traffic incident on the A68 near Healey in Northumberland. We dispatched an ambulance crew to the scene, who then transported one patient to Hexham General Hospital's urgent treatment centre for further treatment."
