A Northumberland distillery has launched two new spirits ahead of its first Christmas open to the public.

Ad Gefrin Distillery in Wooler opened its doors to the public for the first time this March, becoming the first distillery in Northumberland. Built on the land of the former Redpath's Haulage Yard on South Road in the remote north Northumberland town, it is part of the multi-million-pound Anglo-Saxon visitor centre that hopes to "revitalise" Wooler.

Both of its new spirits use its blended Tácnbora whisky as a base, which was released to the public in November 2022, though a single malt is still some way off. They follow on from Thirlings dry gin, which was launched in June and is crafted with botanicals from the county.

The first of its new liqueurs is named Flýte, named after the old English verb ‘flytan’, representing a ritual poetic exchange of boasts, with the drink aiming to pay homage to the Anglo-Saxon tradition of celebrating victories in grand feasting halls. The whisky cream liqueur which combines Tácnbora whisky with double cream and an infusion of vanilla, cacao, toffee and salted caramel; with the aim of capturing the essence of Christmas.

The second is Tácnbora Islay Cask Limited Edition, a crafted small-batch whisky which blends Scottish and Irish whiskies which mature in Islay casks for five months; with a smokier and peatier finish to the original Tácnbora whisky.

Chris Ferguson, visitor experience director at Ad Gefrin said: "We’re thrilled to be able to share these two new spirits that capture what we believe to be the essence of Northumbrian hospitality and warmth as we go into the Yule season. The Cask Edition of the Tácnbora is also part of our exploration of wood in the process of Whisky making, and sharing with everyone how that changes the products we can make”.
