Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher says there's no doubt Anthony Gordon has been Newcastle United's most important players this season, but Cole Palmer has overtaken him in the England running.

The Chelsea forward, who joined from Manchester City in the summer, has been one of the standout performer for the Blues and was part of Gareth Southgate's recent England squad. However, there have been repeated calls from the black and white faithful to see Gordon called up to the senior side ahead of the European Championship's next summer.

Gordon has been a revelation this season since returning from international duty in the summer with England U21s. The Magpies winger won the player of the tournament as the young Three Lions won the U21s Euros - keeping Palmer out of the side in doing so.

Jamie Carragher: "Yes, there is no doubt about that [Gordon is Newcastle's most important player]. I think actually this season and you look at the impact he’s had, I think he’s been Newcastle’s best player.

"Newcastle have made a good start to the season, they have had some big results in the Champions League and where they find themselves in the Premier League is where you expect them to be fighting for the Champions League again. I think he’s been outstanding.

"When they initially made that purchase from Everton for £40m, I think people looked at that and thought it was a decent price, I think you look at that right now and that looks cheap. When you look at his goals and assists, I look at the quality of the opposition.

"What he did against Liverpool with his goal. Trent Alexander-Arnold probably should have been sent off. Reece James gets sent off at the weekend and he scored against Arsenal, he is doing it against top teams. "

Freddie Ljungberg on Anthony Gordon’s goal vs Chelsea: "It’s a clever run. He just waits and once he steps onto that side, he can’t be offside. His arm is above the defender and he just angles in behind the defender.

"This is what I like the most about him, he has speed. He doesn’t just run and run, he has the speed and here he is composed and shows his strength, drops his shoulder and that is not an easy finish. It’s top quality, and what I see is that I enjoy watching him now. I wasn’t sure at the beginning, but every game he is getting better."

Carragher on if Anthony Gordon can get into the England squad: "I think what is interesting is that we always talk about the right-back position being the strongest for England because there are so many options, but actually when you look at the winger options, especially the left-wing, it is really competitive.

"When you look about who will go, (Bukayo) Saka, (Phil) Foden, (Marcus) Rashford, (Jack) Grealish and (James) Maddison will go. I think it is maybe one other out of the names we see there. Cole Palmer was in the last squad, and he has been outstanding since he has gone to Chelsea, but if you go back to the summer where this great form for (Anthony) Gordon started, you probably go back to the U21 tournament in the summer where England won the tournament, he was the best player and Cole Palmer was actually on the bench.

"In some ways, Palmer has overtaken him in terms of getting into the England squad, which is maybe a little bit harsh, but for me, if he continues to how he is going, I think it could be a toss up between him and Cole Palmer.

"For whatever reason, Raheem Sterling feels like he is not going to get back into the squad, again he’s been outstanding, but the options for England on that left-hand side shows the quality."

Ljungberg: "I wish we had that for Sweden. That’s amazing to have, but if I was the coach for example, I would look at what different types of wingers can you get.

"You get different games in the tournament where you have those to choose from, and Anthony Gordon gives something different when you compare to a Bukayo (Saka) or a (Phil) Foden because he’s quick and nippy and is direct - I think that could work in his favour."
