Will Bonfire Night be a sparkling success or a damp squib?

That's the question families - and organisers of the fireworks set to go ahead this Sunday evening - will be asking around the region. Already some early displays have been cancelled or postponed due to the effects of Storm Ciaran.

Others have taken advantage of a dry spell in the weather to lay on spectacular fireworks to entertain the crowds, such as at Segedunum on Friday night and at Kynren on Saturday evening where its Pyromusical lit up the night sky.

While many displays were scheduled to take place the day before Bonfire Night, there are others in the North East that are due to go ahead this November 5. Here's what the weather forecasters say is in store.

The Met Office sums up the day as rain likely this morning but turning drier and brighter later. In Newcastle, it is expecting some sunny intervals during the day and then some cloud around tea-time but, fingers crossed, it says a clear night is in store with risk of rain down to 5%.

Gusts of winds could get up to around 16mph at the most and it will be cold, around 7°C. degrees but feeling more like 5°C. so people will need to wrap up. At the coast, around Whitley Bay, it will be much the same but winds are more likely to be around 18-19mph.

It's a similar story for Gateshead while in Northumberland it will feel even colder, about 3-4 °C. around Alnwick but, again, skies are set to be clear of cloud from about 6pm-8pm and visibility should be good. In Durham the Met Office has a similar forecast, with partial cloud setting in around 8pm following a mixed day with sunny intervals, and winds around 15mph at their height and temperatures between four and 6°C. but feeling a couple of degrees colder.

And in Sunderland, after predictions of heavy morning rain bound to worry any display organisers, the day again will improve from noon, with a mix of sunny intervals and cloud, then a clear night is forecast between 6pm and 8pm with just a 5% chance of rain and winds also around 15mph at the worst.

So - in summary - after a cloudy start to the day, with outbreaks of rain then dry and bright conditions in many areas, be prepared for a chilly night - so wrap up extra-warm if you are off to a display - and, fingers crossed, you could enjoy some sparkling fireworks thanks to mostly clear skies. In more rural areas, a ground frost may be likely given the light winds.
