Newcastle United's Bruno Guimaraes has jumped to the defence of his side after Kylian Mbappe's criticism of the Magpies following Tuesday's controversial Parc des Princes showdown. Eddie Howe's side admittedly spent the final portion of the game camped in their own half as PSG pushed and pushed for an equaliser that finally came in controversial circumstances.

Newcastle held their 1-0 lead until the 98th-minute after Mbappe finished a dubiously-awarded penalty given for handball. Howe's men were ultimately robbed due to the nature of the goal they conceded but probably can't grumble with PSG snatching a point on the balance of play.

That didn't stop Mbappe slamming the Premier League side, accusing Newcastle of having 'nothing'. "It’s frustrating because we dominated this team from start to finish," he told TNT Sports.

"They have nothing. We knew it was their game to have nothing but we have to finish our chances better. We have too many chances for a Champions League match. It’s not the structure or the organisation, it’s us the players. We need to be much more diligent in front of goal.

Those comments were put to Bruno at full-time and the Brazilian felt the need to remind Mbappe that Newcastle took their chances in the first-half - and also smashed four beyond PSG in the reverse fixture at St James' Park.

“Look, I think they were better in the second half. In the first half we were very open, Isak also had a chance to score right at the start. Anyway, he’s going to defend his side, I’m going to defend mine,” Guimaraes told TNT Sports.

“I think we stuck to what we had trained for, with all the absentees we had, we know that playing here is very difficult. Anyway, when we played at home, we scored four against them. We mustn’t forget that either. I think we should have won today too.”
