A major search operation was carried out on the Northumberland coast following reports of a missing man.

The police, Coastguard and RNLI crews were called to Berwick on Tuesday evening after officers received reports of a missing 47-year-old. Berwick and Eyemouth Coastguard Rescue Teams, Berwick and Eyemouth RNLI lifeboats and the Coastguard helicopter from Prestwick were in attendance.

Northumbria Police were called at around 9.15pm on Tuesday, with the British Transport Police also helping with the search. A force spokesman said the man was found safe and well.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "At about 9.15pm yesterday (Tuesday), we received a report of a missing 47-year-old male in the Berwick area of Northumberland.

“Extensive enquiries were carried out by our officers alongside British Transport Police and the Coastguard and he was later located safe and well."
