A newly-married Gateshead couple ditched a wedding car for the Tyne and Wear Metro to travel to their reception.

Sarah and Bradley Stamp made their first journey as a married couple from Haymarket to Monument with some of their wedding guests and the photographer in tow. After tying the knot at Newcastle Civic Centre on Saturday afternoon, Sarah and Bradley, who live in Rowlands Gill, headed straight for the underground where they stunned weekend travellers for the single-stop ride.

The couple, originally from Bathgate in Scotland, had their reception at Lola Jeans Bar and Restaurant on Market Street, and say that they thought riding the Metro would be "such a cool vibe" for their wedding day and photographs, and that the retro vibe of the station "suited their aesthetic perfectly".

Sarah, 29, said: "We thought it would be such a cool vibe for our wedding day, we wanted to capture the business of the city and the retro vibe of the station suited our aesthetic perfectly. We didn’t want a traditional wedding and getting on the Metro to travel through town was so different that it complemented our day perfectly.

"It was so much fun getting on the metro and seeing people’s reaction. The Metro team made a congratulatory announcement and the whole platform erupted in applause. We felt famous!"

Bradley, 31, added: "It was pretty decent to get such a warm reception at Haymarket. The staff were awesome and the other passengers seemed to love it."

Nexus, which owns and manages Metro, said it was delighted to welcome the newlyweds onto the network and wished them every health and happiness for the future. Lynne Dickinson, station delivery manager for Nexus, said: "Metro train isn’t exactly your run of mill wedding car but we were absolutely thrilled to welcome Sarah and Bradley on board for their special day.

"It was a short trip from Haymarket down to Monument but it certainly caught the attention of other customers, who all looked thrilled. Our customer service teams really enjoyed it too, being able to play their part in such a nice, happy story.

"It was a busy Saturday for us but Metro kept our newlyweds firmly on track to join up with their family and friends in time for their wedding reception. Our heartfelt congratulations go to Sarah and Bradley, and we wish them every health happiness for their future together as man and wife."
