A warning has been issued to drivers on de-icing their cars as the weather becomes colder.

Temperatures have been dropping across the UK, with the North East seeing ice and snow on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. And the weather is set to remain cold.

Drivers are being urged to take extra care in freezing temperatures. Certain mistakes could result in a fine and points on your licence.

According to the Highway Code, you must take great care and allow more time for your journey in wintry conditions. It is recommended that motorists check the weather forecast before they leave, and to always carry an emergency kit with items such as ice scraper, a torch, warm clothing and a first aid kit.

However, before they set off, drivers must be able to see clearly, meaning all ice and snow is removed from all of the vehicle's windows, and remove snow that could fall onto the path of other road users. Number plates and lights must also be clearly visible and legible.

According to the RAC, you can get fined if you do not de-ice your car properly. Experts said: "Simply removing the ice from the driver’s side of the windscreen is not enough – you must de-ice the entire area, using the wipers when the ice has melted. The driver must by law have a full view of the road and traffic ahead of the motor vehicle, so it is well worth taking the extra time to fully clear your windscreen and your mirrors too."

According to the AA, you can get a £100 fine and three points on your licence if you drive with obscured vision, reports the Liverpool Echo. They have shared the best ways to defrost your car on a morning which include:

  • Ensure your wipers are not on before you switch on the car as this can cause damage
  • When you start the car turn on the warm air blower and turn on the air-con. You should always stay with your car while the engine is running.
  • Scrape while you wait and clear all snow and ice away from the car and sweep off any snow with a soft brush.

The RAC also adds: "Don't be tempted to use a credit card and NEVER pour boiling water over the windows. When the boiling water comes into contact with your freezing cold car windows, it could at the very least weaken the glass and at the very worst cause it to crack."
