Sunderland head to Devon this afternoon to take on Plymouth Argyle at Home Park, with the Black Cats looking to pick up after the international break where they left off a fortnight ago. Sunderland went into the break on the back of a 3-1 win against Wayne Rooney's Birmingham City at the Stadium of Light which lifted them into the Championship's top six, albeit they are ahead of West Bromwich Albion and Hull City only on goal difference.

Jobe Bellingham scored against his former side to give Tony Mowbray's men the lead against the Blues before Koji Miyoshi levelled before half-time, but in the second half an own-goal from one-time Sunderland loanee Dion Sanderson put the Black Cats back in front and then Adil Aouchiche came off the bench to score his first goal for the club and wrap up the points. Plymouth racked up 101 points as they were promoted as League One champions season, but they have found life tough in the Championship and currently sit 19th in the table, just five points above the relegation zone.

Steven Schumacher's side has won just one of its last eight games but, while they are winless on the road, they will feel they have a chance at Home Park with all four of their league wins so far having come on their own patch. The sides last met at Home Park on Easter Monday in April 2022 in League One and the game ended in a goalless draw, with that game forming part of the 13-game unbeaten run that secured a top six place for Alex Neil's Black Cats, and from there they won promotion via the play-offs at Wembley.
