Jonnie Irwin is off to sunny Spain with his family, less than a day after being discharged from hospital. The former A Place in the Sun host took to Instagram yesterday to announce that he had spent the weekend receiving treatment for jaundice and a possible infection, undergoing numerous tests and scans.

He initially went to hospital citing a fever and acute stabbing pains in his right side, before being put on a drip and receiving regular observations. However, he was discharged yesterday evening after results from tests showed that his liver function was 'heading in the right direction'.

The 49-year-old, who turns 50 later this week, has frequently posted on social media after a devastating terminal cancer diagnosis back in August 2020. He sought medical attention after his vision became blurred at the wheel, where he was told that he had developed lung cancer which had tragically spread to his brain.

And in his latest social media post, Jonnie traversed the airport while waiting to board a plane to Spain with his family - for a much-needed break in the sun. Captioning the short and sweet video, the TV presenter wrote: "Time for some current bun and a break from hospitals and builder and them a break from me!

"Thankfully a mate needs somewhere to crash so there’s someone to keep an eye on everyone whilst I’m away as it’s a big week on site too."

Speaking in the clip, Jonnie said: "Well I woke up this morning feeling a bit better - still slightly jaundice but I'm about to jump on a flight to southern Spain. I did clear it with my oncologist, he said 'well, there are hospitals in Spain and in fairness you don't play by the rules anyway'.

"But my thoughts are that's probably part of my success so far. So fingers crossed, my liver continues to get a bit better and me and my family - we wake up tomorrow morning to blue skies in southern Spain. Bon voyage to us."

And as always, Jonnie's fans rushed to the comments section to wish him well on his trip and praise his 'mentality' while dealing with tough adversities. One, wrote: "Good on you Jonnie boy, hope you have a fun filled sun filled time with the fam," while another, explained: "Love this mentality," with a number of clapping emojis.

A third, went on: "Have a great time and enjoy the sunshine," while a fourth, went on: "Bon voyage indeed! Get some much needed sunshine and valuable family time!"

Jonnie celebrates his 50th birthday with his loved ones on Saturday (November 18), despite doctors telling him he had just months to live back in the summer of 2020. The father-of-three earlier this year celebrated the massive milestone eight months early amid fears that his terminal cancer would progress prior.

Speaking back in March about the do - which around 170 people turned up for - he said: "It was a great night. I chose a playlist with some great tunes from the 90s and 2000s and people came from all over the country and abroad. I didn’t know the extent of the loyalty and generosity that my friends would exhibit.

"I’ve been dumbfounded and spellbound by their support, as well as that of our families, who have been amazing. I just wanted to do something to celebrate my birthday and had no idea how many people would actually turn up. It was incredible."
