Lost shops of Tyneside that were the places to go for years

These stores are still fondly remembered by generations of families with them being some of the region's busiest retail hubs

The birth of online shopping via constantly evolving technology has certainly changed the way that the world works. In 2023, it's easier than ever to see something you like on the internet, and have it delivered straight to your door within a 24-hour window.

But as well all know, it hasn't always been this way. Many will still have fond memories of catching the bus into town to go about their shopping spree in person, as we didn't have the ease of access to goods that we do today.

And while those days might seem like a distant memory - with many town and city centres dying out as the retail world makes the move online - at least we'll always have photos of the good old days of scouring the Toon 'til our heart's content.

Here at Chronicle Live, we fancied a bit of nostalgia this weekend - so we've trawled through the archives and hand-picked 18 photos of shoppers on Tyneside, making the most of the seemingly-endless amounts of outlets throughout history.

Check out the photo gallery below to see snaps of the usual shopping hubs like Northumberland and Newgate Street throughout history - as well as some lesser known retailers of days past.
