The North East could see some snow as this week progresses, according to the latest Met Office forecast.

The region has witnessed a somewhat mild start to the colder months so far this year. However, forecasters predict that there could soon be a frosty chill in the air and the possibility of snow later in the week.

Met Office forecasters say that the UK will see a "cold start to Tuesday" with some "wintry showers in the north", which is expected to continue into Wednesday.

By Thursday there are "uncertainties" in the forecast, however, the Met Office predicts that "low pressure could bring rain and some snow to parts of the UK". An interactive weather map shows that snow could move in from the east, with the North East and Scotland looking set to be affected.

The Met Office weather forecast for Wednesday through to Friday is: "Bright Wednesday, with a wintry mix to showers over high ground and near coasts. Variable cloud Thursday and Friday with rain, sleet and snow showers spreading inland. Cold throughout."

The long range weather forecast for Friday December 1 to December 10 says to expect "a mixture of sunny spells and showers, with these showers most frequent near coasts."

The Met Office added: "They are likely to be wintry in places, particularly further north where some snow could fall to low levels. Over the weekend and into the start of the following week, cold conditions are expected across the bulk of the UK. Showers will develop, these a mixture of rain, sleet and perhaps snow at times."
