A new fish and chip shop and ice cream parlour in North Tyneside opened its doors for the first time on Monday.

Oswin's and Cones are both part of the multi-million-pound renovation of the Tynemouth Castle Inn which re-opened earlier this month with a fireworks display over Longsands Beach. Named after the ancient King of Northumbria, Oswin's will offer "sustainably sourced" fish shop favourites, such as cod and haddock landed in North Shields.

There will also be haggis, battered sausage, and "luxurious" seafood treats cooked in either beef dripping or sunflower oil aiming to give both a traditional taste of the North East coast, and also to cater to vegetarians and vegans. The team behind Oswin's has also concocted its own "tangy" secret recipe sauce.

Next door, ice cream parlour Cones will offer more than 20 flavours of gelato made fresh on the premises daily, from classics such as raspberry ripple and mint chocolate, to more unique experiments such as Unicorn and Cheeky Monkey. It will also have dispensers which will offer customers the chance to add unlimited toppings.

The refurbishment of the Tynemouth Castle Inn has created 97 new jobs in North Tyneside, and follows The Inn Collection being recommended by Which? on its list of best and worst hotel chains in 2023.

Jen Malkin head of the group teams of Oswin's and Cones, said: "We’re delighted to be opening both Oswin’s and Cones and serving up traditional seaside treats and are looking forward to becoming a firm favourite with visitors to the coast. The teams have been working hard to get up to speed and make sure that our food is of the highest quality, and we can’t wait for people to taste it.

"We have learned so much about what it takes to get fish and chips just right through the National Federation of Fish Fryers and the people and Antonelli’s have given us a real insight into making our gelato stand out. Our menus have a great range of traditional, all-time favourites alongside things that are our own unique stamp that we hope is going to see Oswins and Cones fly."

Oswin's is open from 12pm - 8pm seven days a week, and Cones is open from 10am - 6pm, also seven days a week.
