An award-winning Newcastle brewery has announced its closure - blaming "escalating energy costs", Brexit and health reasons.

Alpha Delta Brewery - based in Newburn and run by Ross Holland and his family - was founded in 2019. In 2021 it was named as one of the world's ten best new breweries in the Rate Beer Awards.

However, on Tuesday founder Ross shared a poignant message explaining that the brewery would be shutting its doors. This is the second hit for Newcastle's beer scene in just a couple of months, following hot on the heels of the sudden closure of the Split Chimp micropub in Westgate Road, whose owners also cited spiralling bills.

In his message on social media, Ross addressed the brewery's friends and supporters and said; "Today, with a heavy heart, I must announce that Alpha Delta Brewery will be closing its doors. The decision to wind down operations has not been easy and comes after much deliberation over the escalating energy costs, the unforeseen complexities of exporting post-Brexit, and, importantly, my personal health considerations.

"From the outset, our journey has been fuelled by passion—for the craft, the community, and the joy of creating something truly special. We want to extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who has supported us: our loyal customers, our steadfast suppliers, and the incredible network of fellow breweries. Your belief in us has been the cornerstone of our success.

"I've had the privilege of spending significant time in the brewing industry, and it has been nothing short of remarkable. The opportunity to travel the world, meet amazing people, and savour the finest liquids has been a blessing I will always cherish. However, the time has come for me to seek new adventures."

The message, signed by Ross and his family, added that customers were invited to "partake in a final toast" and that there would be a flash sale of stock over the coming weeks. He said fans of the brewery should keep an eye on their email inboxes.

Ross added: "This may not necessarily spell the end for Alpha Delta. We hold on to hope for the future, perhaps under a new dawn, a reimagined vision, or a different path." There will be a farewell party at Box Social Brewing.
