Twenty years ago this week, thousands of the North East's lads and lasses were snapped having a fun time around the vibrant pubs and clubs of Newcastle city centre.

The photographs were originally taken for our Bigg Night Out feature which ran in the Chronicle every Friday between 1999 and 2012. It was intended as a bit of fun - then and now. We trust the last 20 years have been good to all the folk in our 10 pictures. But what do we remember of 2003?

In our region, Newcastle United managed by Sir Bobby Robson competed in the Champions League - though the Toon had been knocked out by May - while the historic Dunston Staiths in Gateshead was badly damaged by fire. HMS Ark Royal, launched at Swan Hunter's Wallsend yard in 1981, paid a return visit to the River Tyne.

When it comes to music, top of the charts when these pictures were taken were much-loved pop band Busted with their track You Said No.

At the cinema, movie-lovers flocked to see big-budget comedies like Bruce Almighty and Daddy Day Care. While horror classics like 28 Days Later also saw people flock to the cinema. As for TV, the BBC had just announced the 'Dirty Den' Watts was returning to Eastenders, while Phil Tufnell was in the process of winning I'm A Celebrity....Get Me Out Of Here in the Australian jungle.

Check out our 10 Bigg Night Out photographs. Maybe you'll even spot someone you recognise.
