With a matter of minutes to go at the Parc des Princes, Newcastle United looked to have their Champions League destiny in their own hands as they sat second in Group F. Fast forward to present day and Kylian Mbappe's late, controversial penalty has changed the complexion of the Group Of Death in Europe's premier competition.

As things now stand, Dortmund are through with 10 points after a comfortable victory over AC Milan in the San Siro on Tuesday. PSG sit second with seven points, while Newcastle and Milan are separated by goal difference with both sides having five points.

Newcastle welcome to the Italian side to St James' Park on the final matchday next month, while Dortmund host PSG in Germany. But how do the Magpies go through from this position?

Only a win against Milan on December 13 will be enough for Newcastle to progress to the Champions League knockout stages. A draw or a defeat wouldn't be enough to catch PSG, who are two points ahead.

However, a win for Howe's side would be pointless if PSG manage to pick up all three points at Signal Iduna Park. However, if Dortmund win or draw against Mbappe's side, then a Newcastle win would see them progress above PSG by either one point or due to their head-to-head record.

In short - Newcastle must emerge victorious over Milan, with PSG failing to win in Germany. Simple.

If Newcastle end up finishing third in the group, they will drop into the Europa League knockout playoff round. 4th place in Group F will be eliminated from Europe.

Howe, speaking to reporters after the game, insists his men can still continue in the Champions League on the back of Tuesday's showing. "We're still in it. That's another thing we can't forget," he said.

"We could easily have come here and have not been in the competition anymore. We still believe. As much as it's a huge, deflating feeling - it could be another story in our season."
