Newcastle United suffered two major defensive lapses at the London Stadium to cost themselves three points in the capital.

After falling behind to Tomas Soucek's opener the Magpies didn't manage a shot on target in the opening 45 minutes but Alexander Isak's double after the break put them within touching distance of another win. However, there would be late drama when Mohammed Kudus was afforded space in the final third to lash home the equaliser.

The game kicked off in warm conditions with the thermometer reading 24° at kick off at the London Stadium for this non-televised 2pm kick off. It took four minutes for United to get their first sight of goal when Kieran Trippier hooked over a right wing cross for Elliot Anderson but he headed high and wide.

Despite a quiet start to the match, West Ham scored with their first real attack with the London Stadium erupting on eight minutes. West Ham had seen just 23% of the ball when the deadlock was broken.

Skipper Jamaal Lascelles pushed up to deal with Michail Antonio on the right-hand side before the West Ham star rolled it back to Lucas Paqueta. The former Lyon star casually chipped the ball over the top of Lascelles to allow Emerson to run on and round Nick Pope.

Emerson then cut the ball across the face of goal for Tomas Soucek to tap into the net with Fabian Schar's frantic attempt to get back not enough to stop him applying the finish. Bruno Guimaraes was the first man into the book for a foul on Emerson.

But moments later another rash challenge followed, this time on James Ward-Prowse, as he steamed in again in midfield, fortunately for him ref Peter Bankes took a sympathetic view on the incident but it could easily have been a second booking.

The game reached the mid-way point of the first half with West Ham still leading by Soucek's close range finish. As the game reached the half-hour stage Newcastle had been allowed 73% possession without having a shot on target.

Although, seconds later Miguel Almiron fired a shot that at least troubled Alphonse Areola ever so slightly before flying wide of the top left-hand corner of his net. With 32 minutes on the clock, Lascelles ventured forward and was taken down mid-way inside the West Ham half.

Trippier stood over the ball and delivered but Dan Burn's header bounced wide of the upright. West Ham went in at the break with the lead.

And they had the first chance of the second half too when Edson Alvarez headed wide of the post from Ward-Prowse's corner on 50 minutes. Things were not clicking for Newcastle in the capital sunshine as Almiron made a probing run down the right then overan the ball on 52 minutes.

That first attempt on target for Newcastle finally arrived on 57 minutes when Burn tested Areola again, Isak hung the ball up and Blyth lad's header was pushed away low down. Moments later though Isak found himself on the scoresheet himself.

Sandro Tonali won a free-kick and Trippier's set-play into the box called panic with West Ham's Alvarez heading the ball into the path of Isak before he took a touch and lashed it home to make it 1-1. But he wasn't finished there, far from it.

Incredibly, having struggled to test Areola in the first half with a shot on target, Isak scored again just four minutes after the equaliser. It was a lovely team move as Bruno clipped the ball out to the right for Trippier and his volleyed cross for Isak which left him with the task of guiding it home from close range.

With 20 minutes left West Ham introduced Said Benrahma and Mohammed Kudus for Soucek and Antonio as David Moyes tried to find a way back into the game. However, United might have sealed the points on 72 minutes when Schar and Burn combined before the Toon's 6ft 7in star rolled the ball into the path of Isak again.

This time he rounded the keeper before striking the ball against the post before Nayef Aguerd conceded a corner. There were 13 minutes left when Newcastle conceded a dangerous free-kick to hand the feared set-play specialist Ward-Prowse a tilt at goal.

Yet the out of favour England international sent his effort sailing over the top of Pope's bar and Newcastle held on to their precious lead. Newcastle introduced Callum Wilson for the last few minutes as he replaced goal hero Isak.

Although, there would be a twist from another substitute as West Ham broke forward in the 89th minute to level the game up. Vladimír Coufal bombarded Newcastle down the right before the ball was slipped to Kudus who took a touch before sweeping it past Pope.

The fourth official displayed six minutes of stoppage time in which West Ham's Jarrod Bowen cut into the box and shot at goal but Pope got something on it and conceded a corner. Tonali won a free-kick in the last minute of added time to hand Newcastle one last chance.

Trippier swung the ball in but West Ham cleared the danger one last time. Given a rare drop in standards from Newcastle in the first half a point would have been welcomed at half-time.

But the way Newcastle achieved it with that late switch off at the back meant that Newcastle sign off for the international break feeling a little bit disappointed if not a point better off.
