Newcastle's Christmas Market is now back, adding to the festive atmosphere that is steadily building all around us. So far, we've had the launch of Fenwick's Window, the switch-on of the city's illuminations and now Friday's opening of Moosenwirt alpine village pop-up which be running alongside the market's seasonal stalls.

And towns across the North East will be following suit, offering a shopping experience accompanied by the aromas of German sausages and mulled wine. Remember, of course, that we have some cracking permanent markets too - such as Newcastle's Grainger Market, a traditional favourite, and the weekend regular at Tynemouth Station - which will be adding their own festive twists to the season.

Here's a guide to 11 Christmas Markets which will be popping up around the region with opening dates to mark down in the diary. To add to the choice, we've included some market-style festive fairs too, including two which are due to open this weekend.

Some of them are ticketed and bookings must be made in advance online. You'd be advised to book up fast as tickets tend to sell out.
