Three North East restaurants are toasting their success after winning top positions in the world's most comprehensive restaurant guide.

Northumberland's Pine and Hjem and Newcastle's House of Tides joined the world-famous L’Enclume in Cartmel, Cumbria, to win a converted place in La Liste, which puts more than 40,000 restaurants in over 200 countries to the test before publishing the world's top 1,000 restaurants every year. The awards recognise chefs, restaurants and regions who are making waves in the industry through excellent cooking, innovation, sustainability, authenticity and more.

Pine scored 90 out of a possible 100, with House of Tides, scoring 87.50 and Hjem scoring 84.50. L’Enclume achieved the top ranking in the world with a score of 99.50, making Simon Rogan the first UK chef to ever achieve that accolade.

La Liste uses an algorithm to determine the rankings of those that feature. International dining guides, crowd-sourced sites including TripAdvisor, plus reviews in the world’s press are all taken into account, as well as OpenTable, Michelin, and many more.

For Pine, based at Vallum Farm, Wallhouses, in the heart of Hadrian's Wall country, it was the latest accolate since it opened just two years ago. Pine has won a string of awards including a Michelin star - and a Green Star in recognition of its sustainable practices, as well as being named one of the top UK restaurants at the National Restaurant Awards earlier this year.

On the same night, owners Siân Buchan and Cal Byerley learned Pine was also the UK’s highest new entry in a European list of must-dine restaurants. This OAD - Opinionated About Dining - dining guide list, drawn up with the help of reviewers worldwide, highly recommends it as one of the top restaurants to visit in Europe.

The restaurant showcases local produce in the likes of a 16-course tasting menu, boasting ingredients from within a 20-mile radius, including some foraged plus vegetables grown in its on-site kitchen garden.

A delighted Cal, who earlier this year was on BBC's Great British Menu, and fellow Pine chef Ian Waller said: ‘’2023 has been absolutely mega for the whole team! To be recognised in La Liste is amazing, especially with the rating we received. It’s all a bit overwhelming to be honest. Restaurants are only as good as the whole team, and we’ve got an epic set of people working with us and we’re all totally buzzing that our small restaurant in a former cow shed features in such a prestigious list – which is why I guess it’ll take a bit to sink in.’’
