Full list of all the North East road closures and roadworks taking place this week

Drivers in the North East are advised to make sure they're aware of a number of road closures that are in place across the region this week.

While some roads are fully closed, others currently have lane closures and temporary traffic measures in place - a handful of which affect some of the region's busiest routes. Motorists are urged to make allowances for these closures and alter their travel arrangements if necessary.

Diversion routes may also be in place on various roads, so drivers are encouraged to see if any of the works on this list are likely to disrupt their journeys. If you're planning travel through Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, Northumberland, Durham, North Tyneside or South Tyneside, take a look at the list below to see whether your journey will be affected.

These road closures are for the week starting from Monday, November 21 to Sunday, November 27. Here are all the road closures and roadworks taking place in the region this week.

Newcastle

A186 - City Road - One lane closed due to roadworks on A186 City Road in both directions at A167(M). Until November 23.

A695 - Plummer Street - Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on A695 Plummer Street at Railway Street. Until December 2.

B1600 Stoddart Street - Shieldfield - Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on B1600 Stoddart Street between Shieldfield Lane and Union Street. Until December 2023.

Delaval Road - Newcastle - Temporary traffic lights due to telecoms work on Delaval Road at Westfield Road. Between 10.15am and 3pm until on December 1.

Jubilee Road - Gosforth - Temporary traffic lights due to telecoms work on Jubilee Road at Kenton Road. Until November 29.

Kingsway - Fenham - Kingsway in both directions closed due to roadworks between Fenham Hall Drive and Queensway. Until March 2023.

Redheugh Bridge Road - Newcastle - Redheugh Bridge Road closed due to roadworks from Shot Factory Lane to A695 Railway Street. Until June 2023.

Rothbury Terrace - Heaton - Rothbury Terrace in both directions closed due to long-term roadworks from Heaton Road to A188 Chillingham Road. Until February 2023.

Saville Row - Newcastle - Saville Row closed due to roadworks from Northumberland Street to North Street. Until April 2023.

Strawberry Lane - Newcastle - Strawberry Lane in both directions closed due to roadworks from Strawberry Place to St Andrews Street. Until February 2023.

Wansbeck Road South - Coxlodge - Temporary traffic lights due to telecoms work on Wansbeck Road South at Rothbury Avenue. Until November 29.

Westfield Road - Newcastle - Temporary traffic lights due to telecoms work on Westfield Road at Delaval Road. Between 8.45am and 3pm Mondays to Sundays until November 29.

Wharrier Street - Walker - Temporary traffic lights due to water main work on Wharrier Street at Scrogg Road. Until November 23.

Gateshead

A1 Western Bypass - Narrow lanes and speed restriction of 50mph due to major widening works on A1 Western Bypass in both directions from J67 Kingsway South (Coalhouse Roundabout) to A1(M) J65 / A194M Birtley. Work to create an extra lane in each direction. Until May 2025.

B6317 Whickham Highway - Dunston - Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on B6317 Whickham Highway at Mansion Heights. Until 4.30pm on November 27.

Birtley Lane - Birtley - Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on Birtley Lane at The Springs. Until 6pm on November 25.

Cotemede - Gateshead - Temporary traffic lights due to telecoms work on Cotemede at Hartburn. Between 9.14am and 3pm Mondays to Sundays until November 24.

Millford - Gateshead - Temporary traffic lights due to telecoms work on Millford at Sheraton. Between 8am and 3pm Mondays to Sundays until November 22.

Tantallon - Birtley - Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on Tantallon in both directions between Glenluce and Dunvegan. Until 6pm on December 21.

A183 - Chester Road - Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on A183 Chester Road at Burnaby Street. Until 5pm on December 23.

Burdon Lane - Ryhope - No through traffic allowed due to roadworks on Burdon Lane in both directions between Woodham Drive (Ryhope, Sunderland) and Burdon Turn-off (Burdon, Sunderland). Construction of the new Ryhope to Doxford Link road. Until August 2023.

B1331 - Bedlington - Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on B1331 in both directions between Browns Buildings and Westmorland Avenue. Until December 2.

B6319 - Ratcliffe Road - Haydon Bridge - Temporary traffic lights due to long-term roadworks on B6319 Ratcliffe Road near Church Street. Temporary lights will be in place while works are carried out on the bridge. Until January 2023.
