Paralympic and World champion Jonnie Peacock and world record holder Richard Browne will go head-to-head in one of the big rivalries at Saturday’s Great North City Games.

The event is run on the Newcastle-Gateshead quayside every year the day before the Great North Run, and has a tradition of attracting some of the world’s top athletes.

Browne certainly fits into that category, but missed the Rio Paralympics and this summer’s World Para Athletics Championships.

North East fans will get the chance to watch him for free in Saturday’s four-strong T44 100m.

For 26-year-old Peacock, it will be his final outing over the summer before taking on his next challenge as a Strictly Come Dancing contestant this autumn. He won 100m golds at the last two Paralympics.

The pair will be joined by T44 400m World Para Athletics Championships champion Michail Seitis and Ronald Hertog, who silver medals at the 2013, 2015 and 2017 World Championships at the long jump.

They will race on a pop-up track in front of the Baltic on the Gateshead side of the river.

Other events include the 100m, 110m hurdles, one mile, pole-vault and long jump. Other star names include Asha Philip, Desiree Henry and Dina Asher-Smith from Great Britain’s silver medal-winning 4x100m World Championships squad. Philip and Desiree Henry run in the 100m, Asher-Smith over 150m.

No tickets are needed for the event, which will also be live on BBC One from 1.15pm.
