One person has been taken to hospital following a collision on the Tyne Bridge this morning.

Shortly after 8am this morning emergency services were called to reports of a one-vehicle collision on the A167 Tyne Bridge heading southbound. One lane was closed while the vehicle, which was found facing the wrong direction, was moved onto the footpath.

Northumbria Police attended the scene alongside a double crewed ambulance and one person was taken to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary. The vehicle has since been recovered from the bridge.

  • The incident caused heavy traffic around the Tyne Bridge with southbound delays along the A167 Central Motorway stretching back to Cowgate.

    A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Shortly after 8.10am today (Monday) police received a report of a one-vehicle collision involving a car on the A167 Tyne Bridge southbound.

    "Emergency services are currently at the scene."

    A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to a road traffic incident on the Tyne Bridge just after 8am this morning. We dispatched a double crewed ambulance and one patient was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary."
