Newcastle United were just moments away from a huge win in the French capital when their resistance was broken in stoppage time after a hotly disputed penalty kick.

Having gone ahead in this crucial encounter after Alexander Isak fired them 1-0 up in the first half it looked like the Sweden striker's goal was going to be enough to put Newcastle on the brink of the last 16. But when the ball hit Tino Livramento's chest and brushed his arm in the 96th minute, the Group of Death rose its ugly head once again.

It now means Newcastle must better PSG's result in the final game with United taking on AC Milan at St James' Park and PSG heading to Borussia Dortmund. It can still be done but the odds are against Newcastle and fate is not in their hands.

The Magpies survived an early PSG scare after Ousmane Dembele got the better of Fabian Schar and crossed into the danger area. The ball then dropped for Kang-in Lee but he miscued his effort before Kylian Mbappe blazed over the top in just the third minute.

Schar was then alive and alert to make an excellent sliding tackle to deny PSG's star right-back Achraf Hakimi with the Morocco World Cup star threatening moments later. Newcastle were soon under the cosh again with nine minutes played.

Dembele's masterful backheel released Hakimi down the right before he motored on and rolled it into the path of Mbappe. The French superstar then hovered over the ball before a delicate and audacious back-heel forced Nick Pope into a save with his feet.

But Newcastle created an opportunity of their own as Miguel Almiron chased down a lost cause to pinch the ball from Hakimi on the left-hand side. The South American then drilled the ball low into the path of Alexander Isak but he fired over to squander a good chance.

Joelinton was booked mid-way through the half for a blatant foul just before Dembele swiped one wide after the resultant free-kick fell his way. But Newcastle had made it through the opening quarter of the match having kept Paris at bay.

And then came a golden moment for the Magpies as Tino Livramento probed the home defence before picking out Almiron on the right-hand side of the penalty area. Almiron casually peppered a left-footed shot at Gianluigi Donnarumma but he failed to hold on and there was Isak to apply the finish from close range and stun the Parc des Princes.

A key block on the stroke of half-time from Schar denied Dembele after Mbappe had slipped him in but Newcastle went in at the interval with their lead intact.

The second half started with another opening for Isak as he was set free down the middle but PSG crowded him out in the box. With 54 minutes gone, Bruno Guimaraes looked set to open up the PSG defence, but he was pulled back by Lee Kang-in who was booked for his trouble.

In truth, the Magpies barely got anywhere near the final third for most of the second half as PSG tried everything to level things up. It was the epitome of backs to the wall in Paris.

Pope came to United's rescue on 56 minutes when when he rushed out to block Dembele before Mbappe failed to make the most of the rebound and Lascelles was on hand to clean up. There were jeers for World Cup referee Szymon Marciniak when he booked Dembele after a tussle with Livramento but the Magpies made it to the hour mark with their lead still in place.

Milan Škriniar followed him into the book after upended the dangerous Anthony Gordon as he muscled his way down the left-hand side to win a free-kick. The set-piece from Kieran Trippier clipped the wall and went out for a corner in the 61st minute.

Luis Enrique turned to his bench with 28 minutes to play as Vitinha and Bradley Barcola were introduced as the PSG head coach moved on to Plan B. Miley chested down for Almiron to fire wide with 65 minutes on the clock.

Barcola was slipped in by Mbappe mid-way through the second half but Pope reacted superbly to turn it away from danger for a world class save. Moments later Barcola found himself in again from a tight angle but he brushed it into the side netting.

Hakimi tried in vain to win a penalty with 20 minutes left but even after a VAR check, Gordon's challenge was deemed a good one. Paris then turned to former Real Madrid ace Marco Asensio for the final 10 minutes of this Group F encounter.

As United scrapped and battled to clear everything thrown into the box there were Toon hearts in mouths as Dembele was presented with a chance at the near post. But he remarkably failed to trouble Pope once again.

Enrique's last throw of the dice was to bring on ex-Benfica star Goncalo Ramos for the closing stages with Danilo going off. There were three minutes left of normal time when Pope used his knees to block Mbappe before the superstar rolled the follow up wide.

Newcastle fans could only watch on in agony as eight minutes of stoppage time were displayed. At the start of the extra period Barcola looped over another good chance for the home side.

We'd made it until the 95th minute when the home side won a penalty kick after the ball took the merest brush off Livramento's arm - after hitting his chest. After a VAR check and a look at the monitor the Polish referee pointed to the spot.

For all Pope's heroics, he could not get anything on Mbappe's well struck spot-kick and the game was finally levelled. But then came one last cruel twist as Mbappe was handed the chance to snare a point.
