Communities across the North East are coming together his weekend to mark Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday.

In scenes which will be echoed across the UK, there will be parades, speeches and special services to pay respects to those who gave their lives at times of war. This Saturday, November 11 commemorates Armistice Day when - at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 - the First World War came to an end.

The day is traditionally marked with a two-minute silence at 11am and often North East landmarks are illuminated in red as a sign of respect. Remembrance Sunday takes place on the second Sunday of November each year - which will be this weekend - to remember the sacrifices of the so-called Great War but also the Second World War as well as sacrifices made by armed forces in wars since since.

Poppies are worn as a symbol of remembrance and respect and this November 12, wreaths of poppies will be laid on war memorials around the region. Here is a round-up of events taking place locally - with more to come - where people can go to pay their respects.
