The North East is set for a wet and windy start to the week as Storm Debi moves in, less than a fortnight after Storm Ciaran battered the region with flooding and 80mph winds.

The latest forecast from the Met Office predicts that the region will see heavy rain and strengthening winds arrive on Monday morning, with a Yellow weather warning in place for potentially "very strong and disruptive winds" from 4am until 6pm. Gales are expected across the Pennines, before drier intervals emerge by the afternoon with winds forecast to ease off later in the evening.

With the wind warning in place across the whole of the North East, people have been cautioned that there is a risk of "injuries and danger to life" from flying debris or large waves along the coast, while some damage to buildings and power cuts are also possible. Travel could be disrupted by the storm too, with the Met Office saying that longer journey times and cancellations are expected on road, rail, air and ferry services.

The Met Office explained: "Storm Debi will develop, in part, because of a very strong jet stream crossing the Atlantic. The core of the jet stream is currently located to the south of the UK.

"This strong jet stream is responsible for the very unsettled period of weather we are currently experiencing. Further areas of low pressure may develop and affect the UK during the coming week."
