Tickets are on sale now for a special cinema event which will bring The Streets' Mike Skinner to Newcastle.

The singer-songwriter will be at Everyman Cinema in Grey Street this September for a screening of his film - a first - which he then will talk to the audience about. The event promises a rare opportunity to hear first-hand about the story behind his debut feature which is a project all his own.

The Darker the Shadow the Brighter the Light was written and directed by rap star, musician and record producer Skinner, who made his name as The Streets with Original Pirate Material in 2002. He also filmed it, did his own editing, created the score and even his own special effects.

The end-result can be seen at the Everyman on September 27 where it will be stopping off on an exclusive nationwide tour. Described as a visionary work, it coincides with the announcement of a new album with the same title and comprising the soundtrack of the film.

It marks The Streets' first album since 2011, with Skinner having revived his music project in 2017 - after a solo spell - with all announced tour dates selling out in less than a minute. His visit to Newcastle, where The Streets' planned tour date in early 2022 had to be called off due to ongoing concerns about Covid, is set to delight his fans.

Where The Streets is best known for music offering a unique look at the mundane and minutiae of life, Skinner here will be sharing an insight into the workings of his musical mind alongside the story of the film during the question-and-answer session which will follow the screening. The talk will examine how his exploration of types of nightclubs and the ordinary life of a DJ gave rise to a film - based in London’s clubland - described as a tripped-out noir murder mystery".

A spokesperson said: "Whilst neither the album or the film exist without each other, both can be enjoyed separately." The Newcastle cinema is one of just 13 Everyman branches across the UK to host the special event, which will begin at 7pm.

For tickets, which cost £22, see here. There is also an opportunity to combine the screening with a pre-order of a CD of the album for £31.49 or to buy the album alone for £9.49.
