Sunderland are tracking Uruguayan striker Luciano Rodriguez, according to a report. The Black Cats are looking to add more firepower in January and, according to The Sun, teenage frontman Rodriguez is among their targets.

The report says Sunderland's head of recruitment Stuart Harvey travelled to South America last week to run the rule over the 19-year-old, who plays for Liverpool, based in the Uruguayan capital Montevideo, and has also represented his country at U20 level.

Sunderland have money to spend in the January window after selling frontman Ross Stewart to Southampton on deadline day at the beginning of September in a deal that brought in an initial £8m with further add-ons expected to push that sum beyond the £10m mark.

Rodriguez is rated in the £8m bracket, and has scored four goals and contributed four assists in 18 appearances in the Uruguayan league this season. Sunderland have scored 27 goals in 16 Championship games so far this season, but none of their strikers has yet found the net.

Head coach Tony Mowbray said last weekend that he would continue giving frontmen Nazariy Rusyn, Luis Hemir, and Eliezer Mayenda and on-loan Chelsea man Mason Burstow opportunities but, if goals continue to elude them, he hopes the club would go back into the transfer market in January to add another striker. "They will all get their chance and if they do not score, I hope we will bring in a striker who can score to help us get the 70 goals we will probably need to make the play-offs," said Mowbray.

"It may be a year before we look at Naz [Rusyn] and say 'wow, what a player', we just don't know. They all have to acclimatise, it is not fair to judge them on their first few months when they [Rusyn, Hemir and Mayenda] are struggling to learn the language."
