Northumberland's only full-time independent cinema is set to show a one-off screening of the film that put Sycamore Gap on the world stage.

The landmark tree, which was felled overnight between Wednesday September 27 and Thursday September 28, was known as the Robin Hood Tree by some thanks to its appearance in the 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. The film; which stars Kevin Costner, Morgan Freeman, Alan Rickman, Christian Slater, and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio; sees Robin Hood (Costner) and Azeem (Freeman) rescue the character "Wulf" in a scene where the small boy hides in the tree's branches.

Now, the Forum Cinema in Hexham has organised a one-off screening of Robin Hood later this month, with a portion of the funds going to the future regeneration of the area around Sycamore Gap. The Forum has previously screened films at the Sill in Northumberland National Park as part of the Tyne Valley Film Festival, and has been in touch with the organisation ahead of the screening.

Chris Kelly, marketing officer at the Forum Cinema Hexham, said: "It's clearly affected so many people including ourselves at the cinema, and the tree is obviously made iconic by the film. So it's a really nice way to combine those two things to celebrate what it was and to try and make the best out of a bad situation.

"We just want to put on this event to celebrate Sycamore Gap because it is a local landmark and because we are the only full-time independent cinema in Northumberland, if anyone can do something, we should. The National Park and National Trust haven't set up their official response yet so we're just going to do this and work alongside them and all the things they want to do moving forward."

Chris said that the public reaction to the event has been positive since tickets went on sale on Tuesday (October 9). He added: "We put it all up last night, ticket sales have been really good and the public reaction has been very, very positive and wide-reaching and that clearly shows the importance of the place to people.

"The Robin Hood film is the main reason the tree is so well-known, and we want to celebrate the tree, that's really important."

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves will be screened at the Forum Cinema at 7pm on Friday October 20.
