Tyne Tunnel northbound to temporarily close from tonight

The Tyne Tunnel northbound is to temporarily close from tonight to allow for maintenance and an emergency training exercise to be carried out.

From approximately 10pm today until 5am on Monday, November 27, the northbound tunnel will be closed and the southbound tunnel will become bi-directional – meaning there will be one lane going in each direction, instead of the usual two.

Teenager dies after two-vehicle crash in County Durham

A driver aged 19 lost his life following a two-vehicle crash in a County Durham village.

The collision took place in Cornsay Colliery on Wednesday along Hedleyhill Lane and involved a red Vauxhall Astra and a brown Mitsubishi ASX. The driver of the Vauxhall Astra died, Durham Constabulary have said.

The driver of the Mitsubishi was taken to hospital for treatment. Police investigators are now appealing for information following the fatal collision.

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: "The incident happened at 5.40pm (November 22) along Hedleyhill Lane and involved a red Vauxhall Astra and a brown Mitsubishi ASX. Sadly, the driver of the Vauxhall Astra – a 19-year-old man – was pronounced dead at the scene.

"His family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers. The driver of the Mitsubishi was taken to hospital for treatment."

Woman in her 80s dies following two-vehicle crash

A woman in her 80s has died following a crash in County Durham.

The collision took place just before 8.40am on the B6279 Staindrop Road, between Darlington and Summerhouse, yesterday. Durham police say it involved a Mercedes A class and a BMW 1 series which were travelling in opposite directions.

A spokesperson from Durham Constabulary said: "Police are appealing for information following a fatal collision in Darlington. The incident happened just before 8.40am on the B6279, Staindrop Road between Darlington and Summerhouse. It involved a Mercedes A class and a BMW 1 series which were travelling in opposite directions.

"Sadly, the passenger of the Mercedes – a woman in her 80s – was pronounced dead at the scene. Her family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

"The driver of the Mercedes was taken to hospital as a precaution whilst the woman of the BMW was uninjured."
