A driver aged 19 lost his life following a two-vehicle crash in a County Durham village.

The collision took place in Cornsay Colliery on Wednesday along Hedleyhill Lane and involved a red Vauxhall Astra and a brown Mitsubishi ASX. The driver of the Vauxhall Astra died, Durham Constabulary have said.

The driver of the Mitsubishi was taken to hospital for treatment. Police investigators are now appealing for information following the fatal collision.

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: "The incident happened at 5.40pm (November 22) along Hedleyhill Lane and involved a red Vauxhall Astra and a brown Mitsubishi ASX. Sadly, the driver of the Vauxhall Astra – a 19-year-old man – was pronounced dead at the scene.

"His family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers. The driver of the Mitsubishi was taken to hospital for treatment.

"Officers have now launched their investigation and are asking for any witnesses, especially those who might have dashcam footage, to come forward.
